The Baltimore County Council has delayed a vote on naming an interim county executive until Tuesday afternoon due to today’s snowstorm.
Council members had planned to vote this evening, but weather conditions led to the closure of Baltimore County government today.
The council must name a replacement for Johnny Olszewski, whose resignation as county executive became official last Friday before he was sworn in as Maryland’s new 2nd District congressman.
• Why the not-so-public process to name Johnny Olszewski’s successor? (12/2/24)
The body will convene at 3 p.m. tomorrow (January 7) to name a successor to serve out the balance of Olszewski’s term through 2026.
The body has picked five finalists:
• Former state Senator Jim Brochin, who narrowly lost to Olszewski in the 2018 Democratic primary race.
• Library board trustee and northwest community activist Yara Cheikh.
• State Senator Kathy A. Klausmeier, who has represented the 8th district, covering Towson, Perry Hall and White Marsh, since 2003.
• Engineer and former county environmental official George Perdikakis Sr.
• Former Recreation and Parks Director Barry F. Williams, brother of Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones.
All of the candidates are Democrats in keeping with Olszewski’s party affiliation, while the council is split with three Republicans and four Democrats.
